The kids in high school have open campus during lunch, so the juniors and seniors from church usually get together at someone’s house to eat. To avoid the surprise visit, the moms set up a schedule to feed the kids every Monday and Friday so we could be prepared to feed 20 plus teenagers. We usually send pictures of the kids and I love getting them from the other moms. Here’s Abby with her friends from school and church at one of those lunches. It’s a great group of kids.
Abby’s volleyball season started off with some pre-season tournaments. Taryn and I went to this game at Franklin and we got a picture of Abby with her team and Coach Sterling during a time out and also one of Abby while she was hitting. Abby gets to play all around and she loves it. They won this game.
Grandma and Grandpa Black came into town for a weekend and tried to catch as many sporting events as they could fit in. Unfortunately, a lot of the sports games overlapped. So Grandma and I went to Aubrey’s volleyball game while Grandpa and Tyler went to Tessa’s cross country meet. Here’s Aubrey playing. She played in the second set after the first set lost. Aubrey served a couple and had amazing passes to the setter and she and her team won the second set barely 26-24. They played the third set and ended up winning. It was stressful, but fun for the girls to come out with the win after all the hard work. Aubrey was so excited and it was a great game for Grandma to see.
Tyler and Grandpa took a few pictures of Tessa during her meet. She ran around a middle school in the valley and ended up doing really well with her time. She ran the 5K in 24:39. Grandpa and Tyler cheered her on.
Her coach took a picture of all the girls from Franklin who raced. At her school, they have the freshmen run in the open division which is basically the JV team. So Tessa is competing against sophomores and juniors when she runs. She really loves the girls and they have fun training together.
Abby had another pre-season tournament at Montwood during the weekend that Grandma and Grandpa were in town. Luckily it was multiple games because her first game was at the same time as Tessa’s race and Aubrey’s game, so no one was able to attend Abby’s game. But since it was a tournament, she played a second game a couple hours later, so Grandma and Grandpa were able to join me and Taryn to watch her play that game. It was fun to watch Abby with Grandma and Grandpa again. They went to many of her games when they lived in El Paso. We cheered on Abby and her team and they won that game. They ended up winning the tournament so we took pictures after the game with the entire team and their plaque. I love watching Abby play. I realized as I had Abby take a picture with Grandma and Grandpa that I should’ve had Tessa and Aubrey take pictures with them too while they were still in their team jerseys, but I didn’t think about it at the time. I was happy to at least have one picture with Grandma and Grandpa to remember the weekend they came to visit to watch all the sports.
Tyler celebrated his 44th birthday on August 21st. Grandma and Grandpa Black were still in town and they bought him a chocolate cake. I had to take a picture of Tyler showing us his age because he shares his birthday with Mollie, our great niece; and she had a picture on Facebook showing everyone that she turned four. So of course I had to have a picture of Tyler to post in the comments showing Mollie her birthday buddy as he celebrated his “multiple 4s” birthday too. They loved it.
The girls’ high school held a pep rally to introduce all of the fall sports. They even introduced all of the seniors from all of the sports. Abby got to run through the tunnel with her volleyball team, but then she sat in the stands while all the seniors got to sit on the field. Tessa and the drumline played cadences as everyone filled up the stadium. It was fun to see other parents and friends and cheer on Tessa as she played with the drumline. The dance groups performed as well and it was fun to see so many church kids in all of the groups. We probably knew at least one kid from church in all of the performing groups and sports team, so that was fun. Tessa and the band were on the field as the announcements were made and she even got to stand up when they introduced the cross country team.
The entire band took a picture on the field at the end of the pep rally so it was fun to see the picture and be able to save it. They are a pretty small group this year compared to previous years and to other high schools their size. They have a new director this year and with all of the pandemic home schooling from last year, the music groups have really suffered. They’re a small, but tight group, so it’s been great for Tessa to get to know everyone and make friends with students of all classes. They hope as the years go on, the band will grow again and get back to its larger, commanding size, but we’re enjoying the closeness of the smaller group this year.
Aubrey had another game the following weekend at home. She usually only plays during one of the two sets, but she’s always excited and ready to play. She loves that she gets to serve when she plays the back row. The played against Wiggs and won.
Abby had another game at the end of August against Chapin. They won in two sets. The first set was very close, so it was stressful to watch, but Abby served a bunch to keep them close and they ended up winning the set 26-24. They won the second set easily. I had to leave early for a meeting, so I only got to see the first set. Tyler kept me informed on how they did since he was there for the entire game. I got a picture of Abby hitting at this game and also bump passing. She’s a great hustler and she gets to the ball almost all of the time. She will do anything to get the ball in the air. I love how she hustles.
